I am in a period of experimentation, exploring materials and forms to move my work into a new direction. I started thinking about a drawing class I took with Nelson Ferreira at and V & A, and he emphasised holding the drawing up and looking at the tones, and how we have a tendency to lighten our work, shadows are flat, and to be consistent with the tones throughout the picture.
This got me thinking about how I could check the overall tone of a painting using technology, and what I found is images I am struggling with look totally bland in black and white and the ones that I feel are more successful have greater depth and variations.
