2018 – The Arts School

Wow! It’s been a long time since I posted and the reasons good!

The Arts School is up and running and I am loving teaching again! Now we start the new year with lots of courses and a new teacher working with us teaching watercolour (Jo Hudson).

Come and take a class and hopefully enjoy it as much as our past students (and we) do! www.theartsschool.co.uk

Endings for new beginnings

I’ve been very quiet of late because I am in the process of leaving London and moving to “the country”.

I finished work. (Last blog post…)

Now I have cleared out my studio.

It’s the end of a lovely time! It is great having a studio, having the space to go and work instead of trying to steal some space in your home. It helps focus your practise, and allowed me to go big! But a word of warning… Big can be difficult to move when it’s time to get going…

I was lucky to get a studio through a charity called ASC, but it’s time to move on, so I am no longer The Artist in 6a….

Next update (and new name…) to hopefully follow in get the week, fingers crossed!

50×100 Abstract series – “Primary 1-4”

Primary 1-4” are the latest paintings in my abstract series.
The abstract series uses “rules”, always with 3 parts. I start with expressive mark making, trying to be free and unedited in working through an idea, or emotion. The second layer is about control emotions, forcing order, and form. The paintings are varnished.

Studio day.

I made it to the studio and got some more paintings finished!

The next stage is to get organised for an exhibition. It feels good to get work completed, and daunting to now have to do the next step and get the work out of the safety of studio space and into the world.

Studio day, and a new series is started!

I have started a new painting series because until I have an exhibtion to see the last series all together, I feel I have moved past the meaning of making them. If anyone knows of anywhere I can exhibit 2 large, 3 medium, and lots of small paintings, please contact me!

With the new work I am moving away from the control of the past series, and now trying to use the physicality of the making to help me work through my current life stresses. I still use past work as the starting point (either reworking previous work, or creating a base from previous images).
This is today’s work, each will be titled by the date, or dates of its making. This is “2002 till 16.05.2013”

I am also starting looking at mixing media to create abstracts, still focusing on the the physicality of painting, but also exploring materials over form.

This is “blue paint, vanish and birthday candles”
